Memorial Day Parades and Ceremonies In McHenry County Guide for 2026

It is easy to think of Memorial Day as just a long weekend—the official kick-off to summer, the opening of the pool, or the first great backyard BBQ of the season. For others, it’s a dedicated time for spring chores and yard work. While these are all wonderful ways to enjoy our freedom, we must never lose sight of the profound purpose behind this day.

Memorial Day is a solemn day of remembrance, dedicated to honoring the servicemen and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the United States Armed Forces. In McHenry County, our communities take this responsibility to heart, coming together each year to ensure that those who gave their lives are never forgotten.

A Tradition of Remembrance

Across McHenry County, the holiday is marked by time-honored traditions. From the “Field of the Fallen” flag displays that provide a quiet space for reflection to the vibrant parades that line our historic downtown streets, there are many ways for residents to pay their respects.

Most local observances include:

  • Commemorative Parades: Local veterans’ organizations, marching bands, and community groups march through our towns in a display of patriotism.
  • Wreath-Laying Ceremonies: Solemn gatherings at veterans’ parks and memorials to honor local heroes.
  • Cemetery Services: Honor guards often provide rifle salutes and the playing of “Taps” at local resting places.
  • National Moment of Remembrance: A shared minute of silence at 3:00 PM local time.

How to Use Our Memorial Day Guide

To help you plan your weekend of reflection, we have organized this guide chronologically. Events are now listed by date and time rather than by city, allowing you to easily find ceremonies and parades as they happen across McHenry County.

Sadly, many of these events are not publicized very well and often there is very little information available about them. Fortunately, many of these events continue to take place every year, like clock work.

Friday & Throughout the Weekend

The observance often begins early with multi-day tributes and stationary memorials. These locations offer a place for quiet contemplation and are often accessible 24 hours a day leading up to the holiday.

Memorial Day Monday

The majority of McHenry County’s parades and ceremonies take place on the Monday holiday.

  • Early Morning (8:00 AM – 10:00 AM): Several communities kick off the day with early morning ceremonies and parades. These often serve as the first official tributes of the day.
  • Mid-Morning (10:00 AM – 12:00 PM): This is the peak time for local parades and major community gatherings. Many parades conclude at local parks or cemeteries for a concluding ceremony.
  • Afternoon (12:00 PM and later): Following the formal morning ceremonies, some local American Legion and VFW posts host community luncheons or fundraisers, such as traditional pig roasts and picnics, where the community can gather in fellowship.

Tips for Attending

  • Verify Details: We recommend checking with individual municipalities or sponsoring organizations (such as the American Legion or VFW) for the most current routes and schedules, as these are subject to change and are often weather-dependent.
  • Arrive Early: For parades through downtown areas, plan to arrive early to secure a spot along the route.
  • Respect the Solemnity: While parades are celebratory of our freedom, please remember the somber nature of the ceremonies that follow.

While these ceremonies are for veterans, they are not limited to veterans. These ceremonies and events are not only open to the public, but one of the greatest ways for the public to honor and to show gratitude to those who currently serve, have served, and to those for whom this day is all about, is to attend one of these events.

Memorial Day this year is Monday, May 25, 2026
