Explore & Experience Marengo

Welcome to the City of Marengo, Illinois.

Marengo was one of, if not the first incorporated village in McHenry County, incorporating as a village in 1857, and then as a city in 1893.

Marengo was originally known as Pleasant Grove, named after a grove of trees near the town center.

Marengo served as an important transportation stop, originally on the Galena-Chicago Trail, a stagecoach line running from Chicago out to Galena. In 1851 though, the trail was largely supplanted by the Galena & Chicago Union Railroad, which helped spur growth in the area.
