Navigate the Season

To help you plan your spring, summer, and fall road trips, we’ve reorganized our guide by show date. Below, you’ll find:

Family Festivals: Automotive gatherings paired with live music, food trucks, and seasonal attractions.

Annual & One-Time Events: Massive annual car shows that take over entire parks and dealership lots.

Recurring Meets: Weekly and monthly cruise nights perfect for a mid-week escape.

Pro Tip: Not every recurring show happens weekly! And note that festival dates and times may be for the entire festival, not just the car show. Pay close attention to the specific dates and times listed for each entry. We have included links to event pages for each listing; each listing features links to the event website, which we highly recommend checking for real-time weather updates or schedule changes before you head out.

Join the Community

There is something uniquely special about the McHenry County car community—the stories behind the builds, the shared passion for engineering, and the simple joy of a weekend or evening spent outdoors. This guide is a living document that we update throughout the season as new pop-up meets and local gatherings are announced, so be sure to bookmark this page to stay in the loop. And be sure to share it with friends…car shows are always a great place to meet up with friends!

So, toss the sunglasses in the glovebox, fire up the engine, and let’s make it a year to remember on the open road. We’ll see you on Main Street!

Car Show Tips

Whether you are attending as a spectator or to show off your prized possession, here are some tips to help you make the most of your time, and make sure you are allowed back!

  • Look, But Don’t Touch: This is the golden rule. Even a seemingly harmless touch can transfer skin oils, belt buckle scratches, or jewelry nicks to a sensitive paint job. If you want to see the interior or under the hood, just ask the owner—most are happy to show you!
  • Mind the “Gear”: Be careful with backpacks, strollers, and cameras. A swinging bag or a stray stroller wheel can do thousands of dollars in damage to a custom finish.
  • Mind the “Kids”: See above.
  • Start a Conversation: Many car owners love to talk shop. Instead of just walking by, ask about the restoration process or the history of the vehicle. You’ll often walk away with a great story.
  • The Spectator Essentials:
    • Comfortable Shoes: You’ll be doing more walking than you think.
    • Sun Protection: Most shows are in open lots; bring a hat and sunscreen for daytime and afternoon shows.
    • Cash & Card: While many events are free, many shows feature local food trucks & vendors. While most will happily take cash or a card, that may not always be the case.

  • Detail Beyond the Wash: Judges and enthusiasts look at the details. Even if it isn’t a concours Clean your door jambs, wheel wells, and even the “hidden” spots under the hood. A quick-detailer spray and microfiber cloth are your best friends for mid-day touch-ups.
  • Tell Your Story: Don’t just park and walk away. Use a small, professional sign or “storyboard” to list the car’s year, make, model, and any unique modifications or restoration history.
  • Arrive Early: Especially for popular events and festivals, arriving an hour or so before the official start ensures you get a prime spot and can set up without rushing.
  • Bring Your Own Shade: A comfortable folding chair and a small cooler with water are non-negotiable for staying energized throughout a long summer afternoon.

  • Leave No Trace: These shows rely on the hospitality of local businesses and parks. Always pack out your trash and keep the area pristine.
  • No “Stunts” on Exit: It can be tempting to “show off” when leaving a lot, but revving excessively or doing burnouts is the fastest way to get a show banned from a venue. Keep it classy so the event can return next year.
