Welcome to the Village of Algonquin, Illinois, which resides in both McHenry and Kane Counties.
Incorporated in 1890, Algonquin has an interesting role in the history of the automobile as home to the Algonquin Hill Climbs. The hill climbs served as early car racing and proving grounds for the automobile manufacturers from 1906 to 1913.
Interest fell away though after the automotive companies rose to the challenge, making the formidable hill climbs far less challenging, and thus, far less interesting to spectators. Today, Algonquin is still hilly, but the hills are far less formidable, except perhaps in the winter.
Algonquin spans both sides of the Fox River and today is truly a tale of two cities…from quaint little river town to major commercial shopping through the Randall Rd corridor to the west.
