Welcome to the City of McHenry, Illinois, in McHenry County.

McHenry served as the original county seat from 1837 to 1844, when originally McHenry County extended to Lake Michigan. In 1839 though, McHenry County was split, with the eastern portion forming Lake County. In 1844 then, the county seat was moved to Woodstock to be more centrally located.

McHenry was incorporated in 1872, though grew slowly over the years. Initially, McHenry was primarily a resort destination, though after World War II as new industries came into the area and McHenry began annexing surrounding areas, growth became exponential in 1950.

McHenry is also the second-largest for landmass in McHenry County at a little under 15 square miles.
