Apple Picking in McHenry County
There is something truly special about wandering through an orchard, surrounded by the crisp fall air and the vibrant colors of the changing leaves, as you search for the perfect apples to pick.
One of the greatest joys of apple picking is the opportunity to spend time with loved ones. It is a perfect activity for families, friends, and couples to enjoy together. There is nothing quite like the feeling of working together to harvest a bag or basketful of fresh apples and then sharing them with the people you care about most.

Apple Picking Planning
- Do your research. Find out which apple varieties are in season and what they are best used for. Some apples are better for eating fresh, while others are better for baking or cooking.
- Choose a good orchard. Look for an orchard that is well-maintained and has a variety of apple trees to choose from. Check their website, or better yet, call them to find out what conditions are like and what is available.
- Bring the right supplies. Wear comfortable shoes and clothing, and bring a basket or bag to collect your apples. You may also want to bring a water bottle and sunscreen.

Apple Picking Tips
- Pick ripe apples. Ripe apples are firm and have smooth skins. Avoid apples that are bruised, soft, or have blemishes.
- Pick apples from the outside of the tree first. Apples on the outside of the tree ripen first.
- Pick carefully. Gently twist the apple to remove it from the tree. Be careful not to pull the apple, as this can damage the tree.
- Don’t shake the trees. Shaking the trees can damage the branches and cause the apples to fall to the ground, where they can bruise.
- If you drop an apple, pick it up and eat it! Dropped apples are still safe to eat, but they may not keep as long.
- Store your apples properly. Apples can be stored in a cool, dark place for up to two weeks.
- Have fun! Apple picking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and spend time with loved ones.

Pumpkin Picking Tips
- Choose the right pumpkin patch. There are many different pumpkin patches to choose from, so do some research to find one that’s right for you. Some pumpkin patches offer additional activities, such as hayrides, corn mazes, and petting zoos. Others are more basic but still offer a fun and festive experience.
- Dress appropriately. Pumpkin patches can be muddy and uneven, so it’s important to dress comfortably. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants, and a long-sleeved shirt. You may also want to bring a hat and sunscreen.
- Bring your own bags. Pumpkin patches may charge extra for bags, so it’s a good idea to bring your own. This is also a more sustainable option. It’s also a great way to keep your car clean!
- Pick the perfect pumpkin. When choosing a pumpkin, look for one that is firm and has a smooth skin. Avoid pumpkins with soft spots or bruises. You should also choose a pumpkin that is the right size for your needs. If you’re planning on carving a jack-o-lantern, choose a pumpkin with a thick stem. If you’re planning on making a pumpkin pie, choose a smaller pumpkin.
- Have fun! Pumpkin picking is a great way to enjoy the fall season and spend time with loved ones. So relax, have fun, and make some memories.

Corn Mazes in McHenry County
Corn mazes are a great way to get some exercise, enjoy the fresh air, and bond with family and friends. They are also a relatively affordable activity, making them a great option for families on a budget, and are usually appropriate for all ages.
Never been to a corn maze? Corn mazes are created by cutting a series of paths through a cornfield. The paths can be simple or complex, and some mazes even feature designs or themes. Visitors can navigate the maze on their own or in groups, and some even offer a prize or reward for those who make it to the finish line.
In addition to the maze itself, many corn mazes also offer other activities, such as hayrides, pumpkin picking, and petting zoos. Some mazes even have haunted mazes or night mazes for older visitors.
