Speaking of old. I still remember my first skateboard. It was sky-blue plastic with barely enough room to stand on it. That was followed by another blue one, but that one was an aluminum board and was a little bigger. Nothing like today’s boards though.

And at least in the Midwest, as far as I knew, there were no skateparks because they hadn’t been created yet! But we used to put a broom or a pole across two boxes or buckets to jump over. My how times have changed! On a sidenote…my hometown of Des Moines now features Lauridsen Skatepark, the largest open skatepark in the US, at over 88,000 Sq. Ft.

McHenry County may not have anything at that scale, but we might have a few more than you thought. Below you will find a list of skateparks, broken out by city and village. Each listing includes the address and a map, as well as contact information and where we have it, a link to the park host’s page.

Many skateparks also allow rollerskaters, rollerblades, scooters, and even BMX bikes in addition to skateboards. Please double-check with the specific skatepark rules though.

Park Tips

No “Snaking” (Wait Your Turn): Snaking is cutting someone off or dropping in when it is clearly their turn. Watch the order of riders at an obstacle, blend into the rhythm, and wait until the person ahead of you finishes their run.
Yell “BOARD!” If You Bail: If you fall and your skateboard shoots away from you, yell “BOARD!” as loud as you can. A loose board flying at someone’s ankles (often called a “shark bite”) hurts and can cause serious accidents.
Ledges and Ramps Aren’t Benches: When you need a breather, step completely outside the riding area. Sitting on the edge of a funnel, a ledge, or the coping of a ramp blocks someone’s line and makes you a target for a collision.
Ask Before You Wax: Even if an obstacle isn’t being used, always ask nearby locals before applying wax to a rail or ledge. Over-waxing can make a feature unpredictably slick, causing the next person to slip out and get hurt.

Watch Before You Roll: When you first arrive, don’t just drop in. Sit back for 5 minutes and watch how people use the park. You’ll quickly notice the paths (lines) skaters take to keep their momentum.
Keep Your Head on a Swivel: Treat crossing a skatepark like crossing a busy street. Look both ways before stepping or rolling into a zone. Avoid wearing headphones when a park is busy so you can hear people calling out.
Mind Where You Film: If you or a friend are filming a clip, make sure the camera person or tripod isn’t standing directly in the landing zone of another obstacle.

Go During Off-Peak Hours: If you want to practice without the pressure of a crowd, go early in the morning (before 11:00 AM). The park is usually empty or filled with other beginners, giving you plenty of space to learn.
Build Baseline Skills First: You don’t need to know how to kickflip, but you should be confident pushing, turning, and stopping on flat ground before trying to navigate ramps.
Learn to Fall: Falling is part of the sport. Practice rolling or sliding out of a fall rather than sticking your arms straight out to brace yourself, which is a quick way to break a wrist.
Wear Your Gear: No one worth their salt will judge you for wearing a helmet, knee pads, or wrist guards. Protecting your body keeps you riding longer.
