Concert Notes
To make the most of your McHenry County concert season, a little strategy goes a long way. Beyond just bringing a chair, these notes will help you secure the best spot, stay comfortable until the encore, and keep your neighbors happy.
- Down in Front: Especially for parks that are more flat, please consider sitting toward the back if you have taller chairs or umbrellas so that every behind you can enjoy the sights and sounds equally. Pro Tip: Invest in a low-profile “sand chair” to stay closer to the action without blocking the view for the picnic-blanket crowd behind you.
- The Two-Layer Blanket: The grass may look dry, but ground moisture often seeps through standard blankets by sunset. Use a dedicated outdoor blanket with a waterproof PEVA backing to stay dry. In a pinch? Consider bringing an outdoor tarp, plastic drop cloth, vinyl tablecloth, or some heavy duty trash bags. And always air everything out after to dry, either way.
- The Wagon Upgrade: If you’re heading to a larger event, like one of the festivals, a collapsible utility wagon is a lifesaver for hauling coolers, chairs, and kids from distant parking spots. Always check the specific event though for what is allowed.
- The “Freeze Your Water” Trick: Fill reusable water bottles halfway and freeze them overnight. Top them off with fresh water before you leave; they’ll act as ice packs in your cooler and provide ice-cold water as they melt.
- Pre-Cut Everything: Balancing a plate on your knees while trying to cut a steak or a sandwich is a recipe for a spill. Prep “finger-food” style meals—wraps, sliced fruit, cheese cubes, and charcuterie—that are easy to eat with one hand.
- Truckin’: Sometimes it’s easier to carry in a few snacks and let the food trucks or vendors handle the heavy lifting. Check the event though so you know what may or may not be available.
- Check the Glass Policy: Most McHenry County parks have a strict no-glass policy. Opt for cans, silicone cups, or plastic carafes to avoid a safety hazard.
- Drink Policy: If you are looking to imbibe alcoholic drinks, be sure to check the policies. Keep in mind that normal park policy that allows alcohol may be superseded by the specific event policies.
- Master the Ice: Want to avoid buying a bunch of ice. Plan ahead with my personal Pro Tips: grab muffin tins and make ice pucks. Need ice for the day long haul? Grab some deep cake pans and carefully freeze some water into large, thick ice sheets. Keep in mind that both of these DIY ice packs may take a few days to fully freeze, so plan ahead.
- The “Twilight Triple Threat”: As the sun goes down, three things happen: the temperature drops, the mosquitoes wake up, and the dew sets in. Pack a lightweight hoodie and a bug repellent with DEET or picaridin. And be sure to check the tip above in the Gear Master section.
- Ear Protection: Even outdoors, speakers can be surprisingly loud, especially for little ones. Keep a pair of “high-fidelity” earplugs in your bag—they lower the volume without muffling the music quality.
- Sun Management: If you arrive early to snag a spot, remember that the shade moves. Check where the sun will be at 7:00 PM so you aren’t squinting directly into the light for the first half of the show. Afternoon gig? Don’t forget the sunscreen.
- Love They Best Friend: Festivals and concerts can be loud and chaotic. Even if pets are allowed, you might want to consider leaving them at home. If you do bring them, remember that it’s more than just leash requirements. Even the tamest, calmest dog may become unpredictable around loud music, other pets, and surrounded by a bunch of loud, running children.
- Unwrap Early: If you brought snacks in crinkly plastic bags or need a cough drop, open them during the soundcheck or between songs. The quiet acoustic moments are when those sounds carry the most.
- Mind the “Dance Floor”: Most concerts have a designated area in front of the stage for dancing. If you prefer to sit and watch, avoid setting your blanket right on the edge of this zone to keep your space from being encroached upon.
- Pack It Out: Most parks have trash cans, but they fill up fast during popular events. Bring a small grocery bag to collect your own trash, making it easy to carry to a bin (or home) and keeping our local parks beautiful.
- Local Insight: Know your location. If a concert is at one of the squares or other downtown areas, or at one of the beaches or other areas with limited parking, remember that parking often fills up fast. Aim to arrive 30–45 minutes early—not just for the parking, but to enjoy the “community hum” before the music starts!
