Lace up your skates, McHenry County! Our comprehensive guide makes finding the perfect ice skating rink a breeze, whether you’re seeking effortless glides or competitive chills. Want a tranquil open skate? We’ve got you covered. Craving a spirited hockey match? Check out our indoor rink option. From Crystal Lake’s polished ice to charming outdoor ice skating rinks all over McHenry County, the fun is near!
Our guide conveniently organizes ice rinks by city or village. Along with addresses, we’ve included handy links to each ice skating rink or park, and even Rainout Line connections where available. Not every rink has a dedicated status hotline, but many display on-site flags: green for open skating, and red for closed (often due to unsafe conditions). Remember, some locations are unsupervised, so plan accordingly.

Tips for Ice Skating
- Get the right gear: Wear warm, layered clothing that allows for freedom of movement. Avoid baggy clothes that can get caught on your skates. Mittens or gloves are essential to keep your hands warm and protect them from falls. And most importantly, rent or buy skates that fit snugly. Loose skates will make it difficult to balance and control your movements.
- Warm-up: Do some light stretches and cardio to get your muscles loose before stepping onto the ice. Cold muscles are more prone to injury.
- Start slow and steady: Don’t try to go too fast right away. Focus on getting comfortable with the feel of the ice and balancing on your skates. If the rink is walled, start along the wall and use it for support if needed.
- Bend your knees: This will help you lower your center of gravity and make you more stable. Imagine you’re in a squatting position.
- Keep your head up and look where you want to go: Don’t look down at your feet. This will help you maintain your balance and avoid obstacles.
- Glide, don’t walk: Think of ice skating as gliding rather than walking. Push off with one foot and glide on the other, then repeat.
- Learn to stop: There are a few different ways to stop on ice, but the snowplow stop is a good one for beginners. To do a snowplow stop, wedge your feet into a V-shape with your heels pointing out and press down on the inside edges of your blades.
- Bring a friend: Skate with a friend or family member. It’s more fun to skate with others, and they can help you stay motivated.
- Pay attention: Be aware of your surroundings and other skaters and avoid collisions.
- Have fun! Ice skating is a great way to get exercise, enjoy the outdoors, and make new friends.
