If this is McHenry Life, who is Identity Developments, LLC?
McHenry Life isn’t actually a company, it is just a web property or website and services. Identity Developments, LLC, is actually our company, which has created and maintains the McHenry Life website. Identity Developments, LLC, is actually a web marketing firm that provides various online marketing services.
Do we have to register?
Yes, everyone is required to register for an account.

This is required to help combat against spam listings, comments, ratings, and reviews.

No. Nope. Nada.

Why is a business listed that isn’t in McHenry County?
To keep things simple an easy for everyone, we base submissions on the city or town they reside in. Of course, some cities and towns reside in two or even three counties. Our primary purpose is to promote exploration and experience within the community, not to rigidly exclude everything else. There really are only a few cities where this is the case.
Why should I review a business on McHenry Life instead of other, popular sites?
McHenry Life is a local site that was created by people and a company located here, for people who live in McHenry County, and the businesses and organizations within McHenry County. We hope that makes us a little more special than similar sites. But don’t feel that you have to make a choice. There’s no reason why you can’t leave a review if you like on McHenry Life as well as other sites you like.
Why isn’t my favorite business listed?
While we’ve tried to provide the most complete listing of businesses and organizations in the area, we’ve probably missed some.
Please let the business know that you’d like to see them listed in McHenry Life, which is free. If you want to take the time and have key business details like their name, address, and phone number, you can also make a submission on their before and then they can come and claim their listing as well.
The following guides contain more detailed information to help you, especially with more specific aspects of the website. We have guides for both regular members and business members who may be listing or advertising on McHenry Life.
FAQ for Business Members
Do we have to Like you on Facebook?
Well, we hope you love us, but requiring you to Like us seems a bit much!
Seriously though, we’d be honored and thrilled if you Like McHenry Life on Facebook, but to “make you” Like us seems completely contrary to the whole idea.
Do we have to link back to McHenry Life?
Did you see the answer about Liking us on Facebook?
Anyway, same idea. If you want to link to McHenry Life, then please do. We’d be happy if you did, but under no circumstances are you required to link to us…that’s so 2004.
How many times a year can we edit our listing?
How many times would you like or need to edit it?
We realize every business and organization is unique. Some may not need or want to update their listing ever, while others may need to edit it a few times throughout the year. If you are using our “Special Offers” feature, then you may need to edit it every week or month. The point is, once you have your account setup and we’ve verified your ownership for your listing, you have access to make as many edits and changes that you like, as often as you like.
Generally we’d recommend everyone revisit their listing every quarter or at least a couple times a year just to make sure everything is correct.
Do we have to pay to get a link to our website?
No. Nope. Nada.
We consider a link to get from McHenry Life to your website to be a good, basic feature for anyone using McHenry Life.
We do offer additional linking opportunities within some of the enhanced listing packages to things like your Facebook page, Twitter account, and LinkedIn page.
How long before our listing is published?
That can really vary depending on how many submissions we have at a the time, how easy it is to verify your ownership (providing us your official email that matches your domain name or is used on your website really helps here), and other factors.
Our goal though is to get your listing up as soon as we possibly can. Ideally, we hope to get listings approved and published within 24 hours if at all possible, and hopefully sooner. We do appreciate your patience though if it takes a little longer sometimes.
Can we ask customers to review and rate us on McHenry Life?
We all know word-of-mouth promotion is one of the strongest, most powerful ways to market a business and we hope McHenry Life becomes a powerful way for you to get the most out of all of your marketing efforts. To tell you that you “can’t refer your customers to McHenry Life” is just — well, you know.
That said, please read through some of the other questions and answers below regarding reviews.
Can we incentivize reviews?
No. Nope. Nada.
No, really, please don’t.
If we determine, and we have ways, that some of your reviews and ratings are not entirely legit and you incentivized, created, or otherwise had some role in creating false reviews or ratings (for you or against a competitor), then we may forced to take action, such as removing them, banning your account, etc.
But more importantly, understand that you may be treading in deep legal waters that could carry far worse actions than anything we could dish out.
What if there isn’t a category for our business?
While we’ve tried to include a broad range of business categories that should cover most businesses out there, we recognize that we might have missed a few. Or perhaps your business truly is in a category all its own!
Anyway, please feel free to use the contact form to tell us a little bit about your business and what category you feel it should be listed in. We’ll then be able to determine whether we need to add that category or the existing category that best fits.
What does it cost to claim or verify our listing?
Only a small amount of your time…well, and ours.
Really though, that’s it. Our goal is to provide the most complete listing of businesses and organizations in McHenry County. We do offer enhanced listing packages that can help you market your business, but to claim an existing listing or even to add a basic listing is absolutely free.
Our listing says it is an "Owner Verified Listing," except we haven’t claimed or verified it?
While we don’t expect this to happen, the fact that you are reading this is perhaps a sign that it has…or maybe you are just curious since it was listed here.
Anyway, we are only human and if this has happened, we are extremely sorry and will be happy to work with you to establish correct ownership. First though, please check with your other business partners if you have them, managers, and employees, as someone may have claimed the listing without your specific knowledge. If that isn’t the case, then please use the contact form to reach out to us about this so that we can research things on our end and help establish rightful ownership.
What are "Special Offers?"
Special Offers are a feature of some of our enhanced listings.
Special Offers provide a way for you to offer deals like:
- buy one, get one free
- 30% Off
- Get a Free Appetizer
- or just about anything you can think of on your listing page.
Best of all, visitors to McHenry Life can elect to search for businesses that have Special Offers. Best part to you is that you can change your offers as often as you like and there is no additional fee for running them. We have more information and some tips on how to really get the most out of Special Offers that you’ll want to check out.
What should we put in our listing for "Tag Keywords?"
What is your business known for? Or what is your main areas of focus?
This field has been limited, though varies by listing package, specifically to help you call out what’s important to you and your customers.
For example, if you are a restaurant, you might want to list the ethnic or descriptive terms that describes your restaurant and offerings, call out some dishes you are famous for, your killer cheese cake, or maybe there some other important characteristics you want to highlight.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you are a department store, you might feel challenged to list every category your store offers, but let’s be honest, there are probably just a few where you really excel and for which you want to draw customers. And if you are a services business, perhaps there are few key offerings that you want to highlight.
Think about the types of words that describe what customers might be looking for. Remember, this is just meant to highlight a few important areas and you can use your description area to “tell your whole story.”
What if we have multiple locations?
McHenry Life is all about the individual locations because that’s really what your potential customers are interested in. Whether you have one or ten locations may not be particularly important compared to having one where they are or where they are going to be.
First you should check to see if any of your locations are already listed, and claim those that are. For any that aren’t already listed, you should add a listing for each of your locations.
Remember, basic listings are free, so there’s no reason not to list them, as long as they are within McHenry County.
While we’ve tried to price enhanced listings to be extremely competitive, we understand that budgets are sometimes limited and sometimes enhanced listings for every location may not be feasible. No worries, because each location has its own listing, each can be handled differently. Perhaps an enhanced listing for your two main locations, and then a basic listing for the rest. We don’t require you to have enhanced listings for every location, or even any location…it’s entirely up to you.
Why should we list on McHenry Life instead of other, big name sites?
Honestly, we can’t think of a reason why you shouldn’t.
The key word here is “instead.” You never know where your next customer will come from.
Since a basic listing on McHenry Life is free and it takes very little time to add or claim your listing, you should do that at least.
Unless the listings on the “big name” sites aren’t free or are more than you are able to spend, you should probably claim your listing there as well. Of course, this is a general recommendation and there may be some specific reasons beyond cost to consider.
Most importantly though, McHenry Life is a local website, right here in McHenry County, for the community and businesses of McHenry County, so we’d hope that you’d want to be included.
What if we already (or don’t) have a website?
Someone great and really smart once said, “You never know where your next customer will come from.”
Whether you do or don’t have a website really has little to do with being listed on McHenry Life. In this day an age, we really think every business and organization should at least have a their own website. At the very least, you should probably have a LinkedIn company page or a company page on Facebook, but remember, you are at their whim.
If you don’t have your own website, then having a listing on McHenry Life is even more important, and you can always use the Website link in your listing to link to your main web presence page, whether that be your Facebook page, LinkedIn page, Twitter page, or somewhere else.
If you do have a website, then you should definitely link to your website from your listing page…remember, it’s free. In your case, McHenry Life just exposes your business to even more people, and quite possibly, people who don’t even know about you or have ever been to your website.
Can we write a review or rate our own business?
This pretty much falls in line with what we said in the section dealing with “incentivized reviews.”
And if incentivizing reviews might get you into some legal hot water, writing fake reviews is like inviting the FTC to share a hot tub.
Now, you are more than welcome to engage and reply to reviewers.
Please however, heed the great advice your mother or grandmother probably offered up a long, long time ago as it is just as true today in our online world as it was when it was offered, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, it’s better to say nothing at all.” Unfortunately, on every site, and we’re sure we’ll probably have our share as well, there will always be trolls who just want to lob attacks to rile people up.
We can’t think of a single instance where it benefited the business though to take the defensive or attack the commenter. Hopefully they’ve provided some constructive comments that you can use to improve, and if not, then hopefully you can shrug it off and remember that some people will never be pleased.
Can we pay you to remove a negative review or rating?
No. Nope. Nada.
Not every customer experience will be positive, that’s just how it is.
But that’s also why we don’t prohibit you from referring your customers to come share their experiences. So when you have regular customers that rave about your business, don’t hesitate to ask them if they’d go to McHenry Life and “put it in writing.”
We also think it is important for businesses to recognize that negative reviews can help improve their business…maybe it’s not a concern if one review out of twenty claimed that their “server was rude,” but when seven out of twenty have, it may be time to figure out what’s going on.
The one exception, and actually you still can’t pay us, is if reviews are believed to be fake. We reserve the right to inspect reviews and ratings at our own discretion and remove them or ban users we feel may be creating false content.
Can we advertise on McHenry Life?
We feature select advertising opportunities on McHenry Life. To learn more about these, please see visit the Ad Center.
What should we write for our description?
First off, we really encourage you to focus effort on the first paragraph.
While the amount of text may vary, we may use the first few words or sentences in certain areas of the site, like search results or category listings. So this is a great opportunity to write something interesting and compelling about your business to attract readers.
Beyond that, you might want to think about the following:
- providing a brief introduction to your business
- the products or services you offer
- what makes you special
- perhaps highlighting your award winning chef
- the special dishes you have
- the great amenities of your hotel
- the winning track record of your law firm
Every business is unique and this is your area to shine.
We do however recommend you take a step back and think about what your potential customers or clients are interested in, be sure to target what interests them, and remember that if it gets too long, they might not read any of it. The specific amount of characters allotted varies by listing package, though even the entry packages provide ample space.
